India has five standard GST slabs: 0% (essential items like unbranded food grains and fresh produce), 5% (household items like sugar, tea, edible oil), 12% (processed food, clothing under ₹1000), 18% (most services, electronics, AC), and 28% (luxury items like cars, tobacco, AC restaurants). Some items also carry an additional Compensation Cess on top of the GST.
For intra-state supply (buyer and seller in the same state), GST is split 50:50 between CGST (Central GST, goes to the central government) and SGST (State GST, goes to the state government). For inter-state supply (buyer and seller in different states), the full GST is charged as IGST (Integrated GST). For Union Territories, UTGST replaces SGST.
If your amount is exclusive of GST (the base price): multiply by the GST rate to get the GST amount, then add to the base for the total. If your amount is inclusive of GST (the total price): divide by (1 + GST rate) to get the base, and subtract from the total to get the GST amount. This calculator handles both directions automatically.
If the discount is given before or at the time of sale and shown on the invoice, GST is charged on the post-discount amount. If the discount is given after the sale (e.g., as a cash discount or rebate), GST is charged on the original amount. For invoice-time discounts, use the Lekkal invoice generator — it applies the discount before tax by default.
